We tell people not to be embarrassed about filing bankruptcy. Most bankruptcies arise due to problems that are beyond the client's control, such as losing a job, domestic problems, or medical problems.
When clients come into our office, we start out by gathering all their financial information, evaluate it, and then determine which bankruptcy is right for them. Chapter 7 is for people who are overwhelmed with unsecured debt, such as credit card bills or medical bills, who need to wipe that out so that they can move on with their life. Chapter 13 is for people who get behind on their house or their car. And they need to make a repayment plan in order to keep those items.
Bankruptcy is a good option for most people. There are very few people that bankruptcy cannot help through difficult financial times. When someone is facing financial difficulties, it's always better to contact an attorney sooner rather than later. If they wait too long, their debt may become too large and be unable to be resolved, even in bankruptcy.
